Around 8:00pm on 13th February 2023, students of Michigan State University received a ‘shelter in place’ alert text with directions to ‘run, hide, fight.’

The city of East Lansing was under an active shooter situation that would continue long into the night, with the order being lifted almost 4 hours later, at midnight. Three students lost their lives and several others were severely injured.

The city and campus residents spent the following months recovering; navigating the aftermath of that night. Their journey, as journaled in this zine, is one of resilience, grief, and community.

This story follows the crew of short film as they film, Main Squeeze, a student production at Michigan State University. Behind the lens, there thrives the chaos of hundreds of moving parts; the crew hauling lighting equipment and props, testing mics and cameras, fine-tuning each shot.

The experience also comes outfitted with its own set of challenges, from budgeting issues and poor lighting conditions to unpredictable weather and creative differences.

The final product is one of creative collaboration, fueled by a shared passion of the crew for bringing the cinema in their mind alive on the big screen.

Set in a college town at the cusp of an urban transformation, this photo story depicts the debate between commercial spaces and affordable housing. Explore the complex urban planning tapestry where the East Lansing government must decide between funding a downtown parking lot and building affordable housing.
